What to Wear to the Melbourne Cup Carnival 2026: The Dress Code for Every Race Day

Black and white art print draped A-line mini dress for Derby Day at the Melbourne Cup Carnival

Four race days, four dress codes, and one question that comes up every spring: what do you actually wear?

At the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival, Derby Day (Saturday 31 October) is black and white, Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday 3 November) is bright colour and bold pattern, Oaks Day (Thursday 5 November) is soft pastels and floaty silhouettes, and Stakes Day (Saturday 7 November) is a garden party. General admission has no formal dress rules. The Members' Enclosure does, and we have summarised them below.

The race-day dress code at a glance

Day Date Theme Build the look around
Derby Day Sat 31 Oct Monochrome: black and white A black maxi or a black-and-white print, monochrome heels, a structured clutch
Melbourne Cup Day Tue 3 Nov Bright colours, bold patterns One saturated colour or a large-scale print, heels in a single strong shade
Oaks Day Thu 5 Nov Floaty silhouettes, soft pastels Lined chiffon in lilac, blush or sky blue, satin or bow-detail heels
Stakes Day Sat 7 Nov Garden party, playful patterns Prints and dots, block heels, sunglasses

Four days, four starting points

Derby Day (Saturday 31 October): how to wear black and white

Derby Day is the one day of the carnival with a strict palette. The theme is monochrome, so the outfit should read as black and white from across the lawn. The VRC also encourages morning suits for men, and the blue cornflower is the Derby Day flower if you want a small accent.

The simplest way to get it right is to choose one hero piece and keep everything else quiet. A long black dress with white accessories is classic. A black-and-white print does the work on its own, so pair it with plain black heels and a clutch in black or white. Gold hardware sits comfortably inside the theme; extra colours do not.

Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday 3 November): colour, pattern and polish

Cup Day is the carnival's biggest day, and the VRC theme is bright colours and bold patterns, with the yellow rose as the flower of the day. This is the day to wear the colour you usually save.

Two approaches work. Either commit to one strong colour from shoulder to hem and add neutral accessories, or wear a large-scale print and pull one shade from it for your shoes. What looks less considered is three competing brights, so let one element lead.

Oaks Day (Thursday 5 November): soft pastels and floaty shapes

Oaks Day, traditionally the ladies' day of the carnival, is the softest of the four. The VRC theme is floaty silhouettes and soft pastels, and the pink rose is the flower of the day. Think movement rather than structure: chiffon, a flowing skirt, a sleeve with some air in it.

A lined chiffon maxi in lilac, blush or sky blue is the easiest answer. Florals sit naturally inside the theme when the palette is soft. For shoes, satin or a bow detail keeps the look delicate, and a pale heel lengthens the leg under a long hem.

Stakes Day (Saturday 7 November): a garden party with room to play

Stakes Day closes the carnival with the most relaxed mood of the week. The VRC describes it as a garden party with playful patterns, and the red poppy is the flower of the day. Prints, dots and colour all work, and the dress can be a little less formal than on Cup Day.

This is also a good day for practical choices: a block heel you can stand in, a dress with movement, and a pair of sunglasses for the afternoon.

What is the Members' Enclosure dress code?

General admission at Flemington has no dress regulations. The Members' Enclosure has a dress standard, and members are responsible for how their guests are dressed. In plain terms:

Expected Not permitted
Women A suitable dress standard for a race day Shorts above the knee, midriff-baring garments, backs open below the waist, bralettes, bandeau tops, leggings worn as pants, ripped clothing, parkas, oilskin or casual leather jackets, denim
Men (and boys 12 and over) A suit, or tailored trousers or tailored shorts on or below the knee, with a sports coat or blazer, a collared dress shirt, a tie or bow tie, and dress shoes Denim, and the footwear listed below
Footwear (everyone) Dress shoes, heels, flats Joggers, sports or track shoes, runners, slippers, dilapidated footwear, gumboots, thongs

Headwear is traditional but not compulsory. Dress rules can change from year to year, so check the VRC's What to Wear page before you go.

What should men wear to the Melbourne Cup Carnival?

In the Members' Enclosure, men need a jacket, a collared dress shirt, a tie and dress shoes. In general admission there are no formal rules, but a collared shirt, tailored trousers and leather or suede shoes will look right on every day of the carnival. Follow the day's theme too: black and white for Derby Day, colour for Cup Day.

For general admission, a textured knit polo with tailored trousers, or a coordinated shirt and trouser set, is a sharp warm-weather option. For the Members' Enclosure, build around a crisp collared shirt and polished loafers, then add your jacket and tie.

What is the weather like at the Melbourne Cup Carnival?

Early November in Melbourne is changeable. Bureau of Meteorology averages for November (Olympic Park) are a mean maximum of 22.2°C and a mean minimum of 12.7°C, with rain on about eight days of the month. Mornings and the walk home after the last race can be cool, so plan a light layer that works with the outfit rather than against it: a fine cardigan, a tailored jacket or a wrap in a neutral shade.

Heels on grass and other practical details

  • Choose the heel for the lawn. Block heels and platforms spread your weight and sink less than a fine stiletto. If you love a stiletto, heel protectors help.
  • Pack flats for later. Flats are not on the banned list, but sports shoes and runners are, even with a dress.
  • Keep the bag small. A clutch or crossbody that fits your phone, cards, lipstick and sunscreen is all you need.
  • Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Most of the day is spent outdoors.

When should you order your race-day outfit?

Every LURADI order is dispatched within 1 to 3 business days and delivered 6 to 10 business days from dispatch, with tracking the whole way. To allow for the full delivery window, order by Tuesday 13 October for Derby Day, by Wednesday 14 October for Melbourne Cup Day and Oaks Day, and by Monday 19 October for Stakes Day. The earlier you order, the more time you have to try everything on with your shoes.
